Staycation or Vacation? #MFRWauthor

StaycationMaybe because after eight years of trucking and never having a home, and then moving every couple of years while Jack consulted all over the country, I’m pretty much a homebody now. So, while even I have my limits as to how much I can stand being a hermit, chained to the house, I often vote for staycation over vacation. That’s not to say that we haven’t been out a bit in the past several years of living in the great American Northwest. We’ve been to Yellowstone and Seattle, and along the Columbia Gorge. I plan to see Glacier National Park this spring…maybe on our way to Alaska!!! But for the most part, I’m happy puttering in my own kitchen, sitting on my own couch, and sleeping in my own bed.

We have had some great vacations, though. Here are some highlights:

  • The two Yellowstone trips. The park is very different in late SeptemberYellowstone National Park than it is in January! Beautiful either way, but more bison that are also closer in winter, bubbling mud and fumaroles surrounded by snow, and frozen waterfalls. In September the trees had turned and blazing aspens stood out sharply on the mountainsides. We combined the September trip with family, by exiting the park at the east gate and driving across Wyoming and South Dakota to see my mom in Iowa.
  • San Francisco. Years ago—before San Fran lost its way—we spent a glorious week at a hotel at the Wharf. The location was perfect! The weather was perfect! The trip was… Yes, you guessed it, PERFECT! It was on that trip that I saw a man walk up to a corner café. They had pushed back the walls to allow the sidewalk tables access to the inside. He sat at a table and had breakfast and coffee while he read his paper. His sockless feet were in loafers, his shirt hung out, his hair was slightly mussed by the breeze. I wanted to be that cosmopolitan in the worst way, and sit at that café for coffee. Years later, when we lived in San Francisco, I did!
  • London. We spent an unforgettable week in London many years ago, doing a lot of the touristy things. But we also found the Old Bailey and made a virtual toast to Rumpole, stumbled around town until we happened on the Globe recreation, and visited the War Rooms before they were so popular. Such a great time!
  • Williamsburg, When you live in Virginia, you’re bound to have gone to Williamsburg. We have, many times. But seeing the historic, restored village is different when you’re staying in a Williamsburg, Virginiatimeshare. You can go to the restored area when the spirit moves you, and you can relax and nap the rest of the time. 😉 There are some great restaurants in Williamsburg (and lots of good pancake houses!), so it’s a wonderful place to experience history, to golf, to explore the coast, and to recharge.

Of course, while we were on the road, driving, it was almost like having vacation times. Once, in a 10-day period we saw the San Diego zoo and Disney World in Orlando because we could take a few days on each end of our trucking trip. The best part of all of it? We were together!

Which do you prefer: staying home or going away?

Wishing you a blessed 2020. May we all find health, wealth, and happiness, one way or another!

Fantasy Island #MFRWauthor

Great Britain: my fantasy vacationFor those who remember that TV show from decades ago, you know that everyone who arrived on Fantasy Island always left happier than when their flight landed. If they were lonely, they left with a love by their side; if they arrived to take advantage of someone, they were caught but their supposed victims were saved; if they came despairing, they left with newfound hope. Fantasy Island cured all ills. So what better fantasy vacation than Fantasy Island? Except, I’ve been to the LA arboretum that served as the outdoor FI set and know that it was after all, just a show. My real fantasy island, and where I’d go back if I could, is Great Britain.

I’ve been lucky enough to go to Great Britain three times, once with my mom and aunt, once to combine a driving tour through Scotland with my college roommate, to visit my mom and aunt who were living temporarily in York, and finally to attend an Oxford summer program, and once to spend a week in London with hubby. I enjoyed it each time.

A year before my first trip, I borrowed multiple issues of In Britain Piper in Scotlandmagazine to read about a country I had no working knowledge of. So much of what I saw in the magazines I wanted to see for real but of course there was no way. Still, I had a good idea of what was available and sights that might interest me but not my mom and aunt. Nothing disappointed!

But even with all my planning, I still haven’t seen any of Wales. Nothing of Cornwall or Norfolk or Devon, or any number of other places I’ve read about in literature all my life. I haven’t seen the corners of Scotland or the far Highlands, or any of the islands, other than Skye, which in itself is magnificent. There’s still so much I want to see and do, but it’ll have to wait to be addressed in further dreams. That’s why Great Britain is my fantasy island and dream vacation spot.

Most Romantic Memory #MFRWauthor

Jack and I have been married for 45 years and we dated a good many years before that. So all in all, he’s been in my life more than 50 years—since I was 13. Like a lifetime, actually. So it seems we would have had a thousand “most” romantic memories on which to draw to answer this question. Truth is, from the very beginning, all of the time we’ve spent together has been special. We’ve always laughed, enjoyed the small things, and just gone through each day hand in hand, counting ourselves lucky. Has it all been what most would consider “romantic”? Well, no. So I had to spend a minute or two to think back on all the places we’ve been and things we’ve done to determine which memory was not only romantic but most romantic.

One year, for Christmas Jack’s brother and sister-in-law gave us frequent flyer miles to go anywhere we wanted (I know, right??). At thaGolden Gate Bridge in fogt time, I was in Virginia finishing up my year’s teaching contract and Jack was working in Kansas City as an IT consultant. We decided to spend my spring break in San Francisco.

Jack flew into Richmond the day before my break started and the next day we flew to San Fran.

We’d been there before, but always working, never with time to do whatever came to mind. I’d found a good hotel right at Fisherman’s Wharf that provided a concierge to arrange trips from the city and a car rental desk. We caught the shuttle at the airport and waited as the driver dropped off each passenger whose hotel was ahead of ours. As a reward for being patient, he took a detour down Lombard Street, commonly called the crookedest street in the world (actually, it isn’t even the crookedest street in San Francisco).Lombard Street Flowers lined the street, which has to be taken at a low speed not only due to the curves but to the grade, and it was not only quite the adventure, but not something we would have thought to do on our own.

For the next several days we slept in, took our time at everything, and stopped to smell the flowers—and the fish. We walked the Wharf, Chinatown, Union Square, and Market Street. Taking advantage of the great transportation system the city has, we rode buses and cable cars all over. We took a city tour and (the one day we didn’t sleep in) also a day trip to Monterey, Carmel, and Pebble Beach. One day we rented a car and drove down to San Jose where we visited the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum and later ate at one of our favorite restaurants, the Menara Moroccan Restaurant. Yum!

In short, we had a wonderful, romantic week. I can still picture us watching the seals at Pier 39 and eating breakfast outdoors at one of the wharf area’s many restaurants. We were unashamed tourists, and we loved it. Maybe because we had to spend so much time apart while working in two states, that vacation away from family and work pressures seemed dreamlike. Romance, in all its glory

Later, Jack found a job in San Francisco and we lived there for a little over a year. We loved our time living in the city but even the new memories we created can’t compare with those we made that trip. Pure love. Pure fun. Pure magic.
