Three Useless Talents #MFRWauthor

It’s difficult to think of having an odd or useless talent when some days I wonder if I have any talent at all, useless or otherwise. ;( But after thinking about it, I realize I can do a few useless things with great success, and I share them with you here as I share them with family and friends.

  1. I can sing the first verse of “Edelweiss” in German. Yes indeed. That’s a talent called upon often (NOT!). I learned the song in my high school German class and somehow never forgot it. It comes in handy at any sing-along of The Sound of Music, which I’m happy to say hardly ever happens.
  2. I can repeat conversations word for word. So if someone asks me if Susie said that she likes her birthday present of an argyle sweater andRepeating conversations matching socks, I can relay Susie’s whole impression, what was said to her and what she replied. This often puts the questioner to sleep with TMI, but hey! It’s a talent, right?
  3. I can parallel park. This used to be a valuable skill but not so much anymore. I used to admire my dad (and most guys I know) that he could place his arm on the back of the seat, turn around and one-handed, slide a car into a space that looked far too small. I can’t do Parallel parkingthat, but give me any normal space and stand back for the sight of your life as I park almost like a guy with the back-up gene. Of course, I pull into a space whenever possible. No need to wear a talent out with too much practice.

So that’s it. The sum total of my useless talents. They aren’t much but I share them whenever possible. You never know when someone might require “Edelweiss” to be sung in German—I want them to know I’m available!

Julie Watson: Born for Life and Realizing your Dream

Born for Life
As a child, I dreamt a lot about what I would do with my life. I had a vivid imagination, so my dreams were pretty out there. I really wanted to join the circus, but that dream ended when I crashed through my bedroom wall while practicing somersaults, creating a big hole. My father was not impressed.

My dream to become a nurse – and subsequently a midwife – started when my grandmother gave me a little Ladybird book about the life of Florence Nightingale.

When my adult life started, it seemed unlikely that my dream would be realized. After I got married as a teenager, I had to navigate through the death of my second baby at birth and unrelenting depression. But I knew I had to triumph.

Life is so unknown when we set out as adults. We make many decisions that can steer our life in so many different directions. Shaking off negativity and embracing the positive is hard, as so many challenges confront us. And being a loving, kind and caring person who can forgive others takes a lot of strength. It can be easier to be bitter, angry and resentful. To live a life where we are truly happy takes patience, courage and tenacity.

It took faith and sheer determination, but in the end my dream has come to pass – and it is so much more than I could have hoped for. With the support of my husband and family, I trained as a nurse and then as a midwife, completing my studies at the age of 41. I have been privileged to work as a midwife in New Zealand and other countries around the world. My work has allowed us to travel extensively, which was also a childhood dream.

I want to encourage others to never give up on their dreams and goals. It might take years to become reality, but every decision, every thought and every action can take you closer to what you want to achieve.

I wrote my memoir, Born for Life: A Midwife’s Story, because I needed to tell my story. Firstly, for cathartic reasons – but also to encourage others to never give up on their dreams.

I continue to work as a midwife, mainly in rural Australia, and I continue to write. I never dreamt that I would become an author, but telling my story has opened up a whole new world to me. I have been lucky to meet many fellow authors through RRBC, who have been really supportive. So many, like me, have encouraging stories to tell.

And writing a book has taught me something really important: it’s never too late to discover a new dream!

Born for Life: A Midwife’s Story
From a young age Julie pondered what she would do with her life. A job as a nurse aide in the local Maternity Annexe at the age of sixteen gave her a love for being with women during labour and birth and caring for mothers and their babies.

Life could not have been happier, married to the man she loved and the birth of a son. The tragic and unexpected death of her second baby in her first hour of life led to depression, loneliness and despair.

Born for Life: A Midwife’s Story tells of Julie’s struggle to overcome tragedy and who triumphs to become the midwife that she was born to be.

The many birth stories are told from an era in the 1970s through the eyes of a young nurse aide to modern day midwifery in New Zealand as an independent midwife with her own caseload.

To Save or Not to Save #MFRWauthor

To collect means (according to dictionary.com) to gather a group of similar objects. To hoard means to collect items for future use and keep them carefully guarded. According to these definitions, I am something of a hoarder, although these days, colloquially, hoarding implies a kind of crazy mental attachment to things that can’t be controlled. I do know that I don’t “collect.”

My grandmother used to collect little bird figurines. Almost everywhere you looked in her house there was a bird of some sort staring back at you. My Bird collectionmom used to collect those little Hummel figures—not the real ones. But I was never drawn into that. I’m sentimental…and yet, not. My mother-in-law once convinced me to collect pewter cups. In Virginia, pewter is readily available and some of the fine cups used for display are really beautiful. I collected three and then lost interest. Maybe I don’t have the patience to build an actual collection. However, for hoarding…I find that a little too easy.

For years and years (like for thirty years), hubby and I dragged gifts we got for our wedding around with us whenever we moved. By things I mean beautiful, well-intentioned gifts that we never ever used or displayed. Like a Wedding giftsilver serving tray, silver monogrammed drinking glasses, and silver tipped salt and pepper shakers. Nope, never used them. Kept them in the same boxes we received them. But I kept packing and moving them with us because for some reason I just couldn’t let them go. Crazy? Yeah, I think so a bit. Finally, in a wild downsize, I sent all of that stuff to the Salvation Army but—I won’t lie—it was painful.

Even after the downsize, and here where storage is diminished, I have tubs of stuff I keep looking at and saying, “I might use that (salad spinner, Stored itemsridiculous dust collector I picked up in Chicago, book my mom gave me fifteen years ago, etc.), so I can’t toss it away.” That’s how it goes, folks. One day I will have to say goodbye to all of it, but until then, all of that stuff is in four tubs stacked in my closet. Sigh.

Do you collect or maybe (like me) hoard? Let’s commiserate!

Excerpt
Her mouth was wide open and her breathing was getting faster. I knew what that meant, and I’m fairly sure he did too. His expression was one I’d seen on other men’s faces while they were with my wife. He was trying to keep going until she came. Tina’s body tensed. She was very close. ‘Dirty little slut,’ he said, fiercely. This was enough to push her over the edge. She came with a shout. On hearing that, he relaxed and groaned as he came inside her.

‘Let me feel it pumping into me,’ she said. After a moment, he pulled out and sat on the edge of the bed. She couldn’t speak immediately. Raising her head to look at him, she said, ‘That was fucking intense.’ He didn’t answer, so she turned to me. ‘What do you say to Nathan?’

This was one of the moments when I regretted doing this with a friend. Nathan and I had played pool together. We’d chatted many times in bars, restaurants, and at barbecues. We’d always interacted as equals. And now I had to look him in the eye and say, ‘Thank you for fucking my wife.’

‘And?’ prompted Tina.

‘And for doing it better than I ever could.’

Excerpt:

“You are hurt, worse than you want to say,” Rebecca Warner whispered.
Her soft green eyes were filled with real concern, something Adam had never expected to see on her face. “Well, that is disappointing.”

“Disappointing?” Rebecca immediately began searching through his hair for the wound, and he chose to imagine it a sensual caress until she spoke again. “You have a gash to your head that has bled. Dear God, you could have died.”

“Always looking on the bright side,” he murmured, and then noticed how close the lady was to his body. He inhaled slowly, delighted in this unexpectedly rare treat. Mrs. Warner had never been the friendliest sort. “You smell nice.”

“Really, Rafferty,” she chided. She suddenly slipped her hand inside his coat, rummaged in his pockets and began to dab at his head with the handkerchief she found there. “This is hardly the time to worry about my perfume.”

“As you say, I could have been killed. Seems like an appropriate time for noticing the little things in life that please me.” He felt pain and hissed. Eager for a distraction, he dropped his gaze to her shoulder—now bare of the shawl, which had fallen away unnoticed by the lady. The respectable garment Rebecca had worn to church, so stylish and modest, was less so now thanks to the accident. The struggle out of the carriage seemed to have ripped the seam apart, and her pale skin looked very soft and inviting. He curled his fingers into the skirt of her gown and held it. “Lovely.”

She drew back to peer into his eyes again, and then she glanced down at his fist. “What are you doing?”

What was he doing? Adam had no idea, but he wasn’t of a mind to stop.

Betty Ann Harris and Possessing Prudence

Nomad Authors is proud to welcome romantic suspense and paranormal romance author Betty Ann Harris!

Possessing Prudence

What sort of research did you do to write Possessing Prudence?

I knew in advance and decidedly did some research for this paranormal romance mystery, Possessing Prudence. In the prologue, the main character’s ancestors are immigrating to America to escape the rebellion going on in France after the American Revolution. I had to research the historical facts of that time period, names used, clothing worn, transportation used, etc.

Over a hundred years later, in 1897, the story really begins as a beautiful, young woman of French descent, is accused of murder. I had to then research the historical facts of that time period. Then onto current day, as the main character, Prudence Trivit, is trying to solve the murder mystery and clear her great aunt’s name and reputation.
In the main story plot, there are hauntings, poltergeists, a seance performed, and other paranormal occurrences that I wanted to be realistic and believable, so I had to a lot of research on paranormal activities.

What is the main thing you want readers to take away from your book?

I’d like readers to take away a sense that there can be a strong connection between our ancestors and loved ones who have passed on, but you have to be open to it. Also, I believe this story is hopeful and shows that true love never dies.

A fun fact about writing your book.

There is a seance that takes place in the book, so I viewed videos of actual seances and read about how they are performed. It was quite interesting and a bit spooky sometimes. One particular video gave me goosebumps

Do you have a day job? What was your job before you started writing full time?

Besides being an author, I am an author/book promoter. I have my own small business, Love Writers Bibliophiles & Promotions, that has been operating since 2009. Prior to that, I worked for a landscape design firm and garden center taking care of the multitude of plants and I also worked in the office part-time. I’ve always been an avid plant lover.

What do your friends and family think about your being a writer?

My friends like the idea that I’m an author and most of them support me quite a bit. I must laugh to myself, though, as they tend to think the life of a romance author is what they’d like to believe it is: getting up at 10:00 in the morning, grabbing a cup of coffee and a muffin, then sitting in my lovely, little office space, music playing in the background, and typing my manuscript with my bathrobe and fuzzy slippers on. It’s not like that at all!

The biggest surprise you had after becoming an author.

I must say, I was surprised at how time consuming it is to gain a following and to promote my books. It is a never-ending process.

Do you outline books ahead of time or are you more of a by-the-seat-of-your-pants writer?

For my first written book, Eureka Point, I tried to do an outline, but soon discovered that was not the way I roll. So I guess you could call me a by-the-seat-of-your-pants writer. I also write in complete chronological order, never writing chapter six before chapter two or anything like that. The story unfolds in my mind that way, kind of like watching a movie scene.

Which kind of scenes are the hardest for you to write? Action, dialogue, sex?

For me, the hardest scenes to write are action scenes. So many effects have to be considered, like movements, sounds, etc. I do, however, love to write dialogue and it comes fairly easy. I think you can show a lot about your characters’ personalities by what they say and how they say it.

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

I have several hobbies that I enjoy. The first is interior decorating. I loved it when we moved into our new townhouse so I could start at square one and decorate the rooms. I love looking at paint color samples, fabrics and snooping around for vintage pieces.

I also enjoy going out to lunch with friends, or visiting a tea rooms, and shopping.

I spend a lot of time with my two adorable dogs, Daisy and Dexter, commonly known as D&D.

Why did you choose the shirt you have on?

I live in southeastern Pennsylvania and I very much dislike the winter. I chose the long-sleeved, heavier weight shirt I have on because it’s warm and comfortable.

What errand/chore do you despise the most?

I absolutely detest having to drive to the post office. But I love to go grocery shopping.

What are you working on now?

I’m currently working on a quirky cozy mystery but would love to write a sequel to Possessing Prudence. I have some ideas for that and hope to get cracking on that soon. I became quite attached to my characters, and with Prudence Trivit, never more so. I’d like to know her and have her as a friend in real life.

Betty Ann Harris and Possessing Prudence

Possessing Prudence Book Blurb:

The quaint seaport town of Mystic Port is steeped in history. Prudence Trivit, the town’s historian, is on a mission to find out the truth about her Great Aunt Alexandra Beaudicort, who was accused and found guilty of murdering her husband, the Mayor of Mystic Port, back in 1897. Prudence, known as Prudy, is certain of her great aunt’s innocence.

A handsome young journalist, Dylan Monroe, is sent to Mystic Port to interview Prudy in advance of the town’s 250th anniversary celebration. Dylan immediately notices Prudy’s uncanny resemblance to her great aunt in the huge portrait of Alexandra that hangs in the museum. Stunned by her beauty and so intrigued by the story of Alexandra, Dylan falls for Prudy, and together they investigate to find out the truth. But uncovering the truth comes with some mishaps and mayhem. As the spirit of Alexandra points them in the right direction, the opposing spirits try to dissuade them.

“If you’re a fan of Jessica L. Randall’s, The Obituary Society Series, then you’ll be charmed by Betty Ann Harris’ Possessing Prudence.”

Excerpt from Possessing Prudence:

Dylan turned on the recorder and started asking questions. “I’m intrigued by this Beaudicort woman. Can you tell me more about her?”

“Yes, well, Samuel Beaudicort was the mayor of Mystic Port in the eighteen nineties. His bride, Alexandra, was actually in charge of his mayoral campaign. It was unusual for a woman prior to women’s suffrage to hold a position of such importance, and to have been successful in getting her husband elected.”

“Are you saying she was a woman ahead of her time?”

“Yes, I guess I am. From what I’ve been told and from what I’ve read about her, she was one of those women who wanted to have it all: a loving marriage, successful career, children, and she had an extreme interest in politics.”

“That’s quite interesting. She must have had a very full life.”

“Well, she did have one child, a son named Simon. Unfortunately, before she had a chance to have any more children, her husband, the mayor, died suddenly while in office. Devastated as she was to have lost her husband at such an early age, leaving her a widow at twenty-four, she carried on displaying grace and great strength. She wanted to take her husband’s place as mayor, but she was unable to do so.”

“Do you mean because she was a woman?”

“I’m not sure if she could have become mayor or not. I rather doubt it. But she wasn’t given the chance, because something happened that changed her life forever.” Prudy paused for effect.

Dylan appeared most intrigued. “Please, continue, what happened?”

“Alexandra was arrested for the murder of her husband.”

Blurb

Out-of-work violinist Erica Timberly decides enough is enough. She leaves her abusive boyfriend and flees the big city, but then her car breaks down in the middle of the night. Though wary of men, she accepts help from Dylan Haynes, a stranger driving by on the road, and soon recognizes him as the sexy former drummer of her favorite indie rock band. Maybe, just maybe, her run of bad luck is finally turning around.

Music teacher Dylan Haynes knows Erica is in trouble, and her black eye is only the first clue. The stubborn yet vulnerable woman needs a friend, but he’s determined to give her everything she deserves.

Will Erica listen to the music in her heart and trust Dylan, or will her past always threaten her future?

Excerpt

Erica leaned up and combed her fingers through her hair. “I’ve never made love outside before. It’s a surreal experience.”

“We can do it wherever you want. In an elevator, in an alley, in my car. I’m game anywhere and everywhere for as long as you want me.”

“I want you so much it hurts.”

Dylan thumbed her knuckles and hoped she meant that. “I don’t know how you feel about labels, but I haven’t had a girlfriend in years. I’ve just had flings, but I want more than that with you. I want us to be with each other and no one else. I want a relationship with you.”

Tears welled in her eyes. “I feel divided in two. A part of me thinks we’re moving too fast, but another part says to jump in with both feet. I want something real with you too. I don’t want to feel dirty after we fool around. Just make me happy. Will you do that, Dylan?”

Her soft, pain-filled words struck Dylan like a dagger in his gut, and he bit the insides of his cheeks to steady his features.

Her ex-boyfriend had probably called her names and degraded her after they would find release in each other’s body, and the bastard likely never cared if she reached climax at all.

“I understand, Erica. I promise to treat you with nothing but respect, and I will do my very best to make you happy. I swear you will always scream your head off in pleasure every time I touch you. I’m not the sort of man to get my jollies off and leave my girl hanging.”

Her lips twitched up in a grin. “That’s good to hear.”

“So are you my girl?”

“Yeah, I’m your girl.” Erica giggled and tapped her fingers on his chest.

“How could I not be? You make a very compelling argument, but I will have to hold you to it. I’m definitely looking forward to screaming every time you touch me.”

“Let’s rest, and then we’ll play again. The night’s early, and I’ve only just begun.”

As director of design for the O Spa chain, a sophisticated women’s club that is trending its way into being the Next Big Thing, Chloe’s ready to take on the world.

One baby at a time.

Her home study’s done, and she’s about to adopt, a thirty-something single mother by choice. Who needs to put her life on hold for the right guy when the right baby is waiting for her?

Besides, talk about fantasy.

The right guy?

Pfft. Right.

And then in walks Nick Grafton, with those commanding sapphire eyes and wavy blonde hair and a sophisticated mouth that only smiles for her.

He’s perfect.

But the last thing Nick wants is to start fresh with a new baby as his college-age kids fly the coop. A single father for more than fifteen years after his wife walked out on her family, Nick finally tastes freedom.

But he likes the taste of Chloe more.

From billionaires to BBWs to new adult rock stars, Julia finds a sensual, goofy joy in every contemporary romance she writes. She lives in New England with her husband and three sons in a household where the toilet seat is never, ever, down.

Excerpt:

O is a twenty-first century club for sophisticated women. A fourth space for women of a discerning taste.

Home is the first space. Work is the second space. Third spaces are locations like coffee shops and malls.

O is the fourth space. The space where you can arrive. Rest. Relax. Indulge. Be someone you can’t be in the other three spaces.

Based on our membership rates, we’re onto something. Our investors are, shall we say, pleased.

O does have a public presence, thanks to our retail environments. In Boston, Chicago, San Francisco, and soon in New Orleans, sophisticated consumers can spend hours—and hundreds of dollars—browsing our selection of “elegant accessories for intimate pleasure.”

That’s right—sex toys. That’s what the masses call them. Except at O, we cater to a clientele that doesn’t want to be one of the hoi polloi. They want to be unique. In the know. Enlightened and cosmopolitan on the surface.

But a wildcat down…below.

Which makes a Grade C unacceptable. No one wants to be average.

Especially down below.

Chasing the Chambermaid

Excerpt from Chasing the Chambermaid by Lucy Felthouse:
Prologue
Only the slop, slop, slopping sound of her painfully slow footsteps through the thick, sucking mud convinced Connie White she was actually making any progress. Her limbs and extremities had long since gone so numb that she couldn’t be sure otherwise.

Come on, Con, just a little bit further. That sign said something about an estate, and an estate means buildings. A bloody cowshed will do—anything for some respite from this infernal sodding weather.

She pushed on for several more minutes, then gasped with shock and relief when her next step met not with sloppy mud or waterlogged grass, but a track. A rough track, but a track nonetheless. And it had to lead somewhere, surely? It ran left to right across the line she’d been taking, so Connie had to make a decision. Which way would lead her to… something? She was already soaked to the skin and freezing cold, so a couple of seconds of rumination wouldn’t make the slightest bit of difference to her physical state. She really didn’t want to end up going in the wrong direction and heading further away from any semblance of civilisation.

She took a breath and remembered her gran’s—long since dead, bless her—nonsensical motto—or one of them, anyway: If in doubt, turn left.

Connie shrugged, and another of her gran’s daft phrases flitted into her brain. In for a penny, in for a pound.

She hiked her backpack higher, hunched her shoulders against the relentless wind and rain, and turned left. Moments later, she was rewarded as the hulking shape of a building appeared from the sheets of wind-buffeted rain. Excitement gave her a burst of energy, spurring her on. Fifty feet. Forty. Twenty-five. God, what was this place? It looked so old and decrepit the Vikings could have left it behind. Doesn’t matter. If it provides even a modicum of shelter, it’s an improvement on where you slept last night. The wooden bench on the tiny village’s green hadn’t exactly been the warmest or most comfortable place to lay her head. And she shuddered to think about what would have happened if someone unsavoury had happened across her, alone and vulnerable. She’d been very glad to wake up and hurriedly continue on her journey that morning.

The last few feet went by in a blur of motion, her body still numb and not entirely under her control. At least the track was easier to walk on. It wasn’t particularly smooth, but at least it wasn’t trying to pull off her walking boots, like the sucking mud had been.

Finally, she burst through the building’s heavy door, only the adrenaline pumping in her veins making it possible to even shift the thing. Fuck, I’m exhausted.

The last thing she remembered was shucking off her backpack and slamming the door against the elements. Then silence.
