Often to my own detriment. Like when giving advice. Or taking it. I\u2019m a Virgo (as you might have gleaned from the title) and that makes me a <em>bit<\/em> stubborn when it comes to always knowing what\u2019s best\u2014for myself and others. Thus, I give advice much more easily than I take it. (See second sentence again.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So,\nI would like to explain when I <em>know<\/em>\n(in my mind and in my heart) when it\u2019s best to give advice: Only when my advice\nis in the very best interest of the person to whom I\u2019m imparting my wisdom. And\nonly in a very sensitive, insightful way. So\u2026 Rules for giving advice:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Do\nnot share your opinion even though you\u2019re sure the person will be <em>so<\/em> grateful once he\/she sees the wisdom behind\nthe words.<\/li><li>Do\nnot share your opinion even when you see a situation as a teachable moment.<\/li><li>Do\nnot share your opinion when sharing will make you feel better and the other\nperson worse.<\/li><li>Do\nnot share your opinion when the other person quite obviously is venting and not\nlooking for advice. (I hate it when hubby does this to me but it hasn\u2019t always\nstopped me from doing the same\u2026)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Now\nwhen it comes to receiving advice, there is only one rule: Don\u2019t give it unless\nI ask for it or am in such a state that you feel you must say something before\nI jump off the ledge. I\u2019m kinda bad about saying I don\u2019t like your suggestions\nbut very good at ignoring it. This applies to face-to-face interactions and written\nadvice. It applies to my mom, my friends, and my editors (although I usually\nbow to editors once I get past the markups). Being a Virgo is hell sometimes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\nhope that my feelings about advice don\u2019t make people hate me. But you know, if\nit does and you have advice about how to fix that, please don\u2019t bother.
