\n<\/strong>Greetings. My name is Lisabet, and I\u2019m an engineer.<\/p>\n

In the so-called real world, I design and write computer software. I also manage development projects and mentor other engineers. I\u2019m surrounded by smart people who enjoy the puzzles of technology and who like to make things work. It\u2019s a challenging but exciting environment, an environment in which solving a tough problem can be as satisfying as… well, maybe even as satisfying as an orgasm. In a different way of course.<\/p>\n

In The Journeyman\u2019s Trial<\/em> I\u2019ve indulged myself by bringing some of that excitement into the story. The Toymakers Guild is basically a group of young Victorian nerds. Archie\u2019s a genius with electricity. Rafe\u2019s a chemist as well as a creative mechanical engineer. Jia excels at clockwork artifacts and optics. My heroine Gillian has skills in all these areas, but what fascinates her most is mathematics and computation. In a world where computers don\u2019t really exist yet, she\u2019s trying to create them and figure out how to make them work.<\/p>\n

Then there\u2019s the Master Toymaker, a genius who not only knows how to design and build physical devices, but who also has a deep understanding of human thought and emotions.<\/p>\n

The novel includes pseudo-technical descriptions of the outrageous sexual artifacts the Guild produces. I suppose that some people might get impatient with my flights of engineering fancy, but for me, that has been part of the fun in writing this series. I love imagining how innovations that are commonplace today might have been realized in the Victorian era, given the technical limitations of the period.<\/p>\n

Is the book realistic? Well, yes and no. I\u2019ve taken a lot of technical liberties, but in fact the second half of the nineteenth century was a time of great progress and innovation.<\/p>\n

And what about the sexual insatiability of my characters?<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve known, and loved, a lot of nerds in my life. Contrary to the stereotypes, really intelligent people are often very active sexually. They have a richer, more\u00a0 elaborated understanding of desire and the many ways it can be fulfilled. None of the characters in The Journeyman\u2019s Trial<\/em> is based on a real person, but I\u2019ve been involved with quite a few brilliant individuals who had similar attitudes \u2013 open-minded, experimental and focused on giving and receiving pleasure.<\/p>\n

Just like Gillian and her uninhibited colleagues.<\/p>\n

When he let go, she continued to feel his hands, heating her skin through the fabric of her garment.<\/p>\n

\u201cGood afternoon, Rafe.\u201d She brushed some imaginary dust off her somewhat wrinkled lab coat. It was true that she\u2019d barely spoken two words to her fellow journeyman since he\u2019d rescued her on the moors two weeks before. Half the time he hadn\u2019t even been at the dinner table. She\u2019d wondered if he was travelling again. \u201cI\u2019ve been occupied with learning my new duties. The Master has been training me.\u201d<\/p>\n

His eyebrows arched. \u201cTraining, hmm? I\u2019d like to know more about just what that<\/em> entails!\u201d He ran his fingers through his unkempt black locks. \u201cI<\/em> never got any sort of training from the Master. Of course, he hasn\u2019t been around much. If I recall, he left Randerley only a few weeks after I joined the Guild.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen was that?\u201d She wasn\u2019t sure how she felt about the brash, forward young man who\u2019d stolen a kiss within half an hour of her meeting him. Well, perhaps stolen wasn\u2019t exactly the right term, but still, he seemed to have quite familiar manners.<\/p>\n

\u201cTwo years ago last Christmas. Seems like a lifetime.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd before the Guild?\u201d<\/p>\n

His expression darkened. \u201cI don\u2019t really want to talk about that. Anyway, I\u2019ve got an appointment with the Master in two minutes.\u201d<\/p>\n

Gillian stepped back to give him free access to the stairs. \u201cYou mustn\u2019t keep him waiting, then.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cBut I\u2019m really delighted to run into you.\u201d He chuckled at his own jest. \u201cCare to go riding with me tomorrow afternoon?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve got quite a lot of work\u2014\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWell… I grew up in the city, so I\u2019m not much of a horsewoman.\u201d She had to admit to being curious about Rafe. With his loose-limbed grace and easy smile, he was definitely attractive. Shouldn\u2019t she be focused on her training, though?<\/p>\n

\u201cWe\u2019ll put you on Dorothea. She\u2019s a sweet, biddable mare who won\u2019t give you any trouble. And Samson likes her.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know…\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve got to go!\u201d He squeezed her shoulder briefly and ran his fingers through her curls, then bounded up the stairs. \u201cMeet you at the stables tomorrow at three,\u201d he called out as he climbed out of sight.<\/p>\n
