When Ritter arrived at the gym, he spotted Cole jumping rope. He stopped and glanced at the wall clock. \u201cYou\u2019re late. Roommate didn\u2019t have you tied up, did she?\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cVery funny. We got a dog. Stayed up playing with him. I hit the snooze one time too many.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
Cole ran a towel over his face, then his lips curled. \u201cThat\u2019s not good.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cWhat? Getting a puppy?\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cNaw. The we in that sentence sounds like a contract extension.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
Ritter stretched. \u201cI won\u2019t lie. I\u2019ve gone home to an empty house so long, thought having someone there would drive me nuts, but it hasn\u2019t\u2014for the most part.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
Cole stepped on the nearest treadmill, turned it on, and ran a steady pace. \u201cI gotta hand it to you. You\u2019ve managed to sleep with her and keep your hands to yourself. Or have you?\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
Ritter climbed onto the machine next to Cole\u2019s and matched his stride. No need to confess he hadn\u2019t exactly resisted, but he\u2019d not passed second base\u2014by much. Had it not been for the phone call, he would have hit a home run. He\u2019d had the wood for it. \u201cNo.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cCome on. No way you haven\u2019t hit that. Especially after what you told me about her coming on to you.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s why I can\u2019t let her stay. My resistance is wearing thin.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
Ritter and Cole\u2019s phones sounded a text at the same time. Ritter read his, then shot Cole a look. \u201cTurns out, we\u2019re off this afternoon.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
Cole dropped his cell back into the cupholder. \u201cI\u2019ve never been to New Jersey. You?\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
\u201cNope but looks like the storm is calling us there.\u201d<\/span><\/div>\n
