Genre: Romantic Suspense

Book Blurb:

When you’re born without a trace, no one knows you’re a weapon.

I lie for her.
I hunt for her.
I kill for her.
And above all, I betray my mission for her.
She doesn’t know why. She doesn’t care why.
I do.
Treason comes in many forms.
Love is one of them.
Our training taught me to be a sociopath. A machine. A pawn. Nothing more than a tool for a larger goal, without attachments or feelings.
Our teachers forgot one important detail:
Pawns shouldn’t have hearts.
Yet we do.
It turns out our emotions are our greatest weapon.
And I know exactly where mine are aimed.

The Stateless Series also includes:

Stateless by Meli Raine

Excerpt:

“Thank you,” I choke out.
“For what?” His eyes cut away. The air between us has changed. I can’t explain it. Suddenly, I’m uncomfortable.
And yet I just want to be with him.
“For killing for me.”
As the words come forth from my mouth, I cringe inside. I did not mean to say for me. “For me” implies that he killed the bunny out of some attachment to me.
We are not allowed to have emotions for one another. It puts us at risk.
“I did it for me,” he says, louder than he should need to.
“You did?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“To challenge Romeo.”
“Why would you do that?” My voice goes up to a sharp squeak at the end, incredulous.
He laughs. “Because we are taught to destabilize power structures.” He looks around. “What do you think the compound is?”

Reviews and Endorsements for Meli Raine Books:

“The first book in the False trilogy is a psychological thriller worthy of Hitchcock, keeping you guessing until the very end.” — Apple Books Editors

“…intrigue and dark humor on display in this thriller…”

While the immediate—and more compelling—tension in Raine’s (A Shameless Little Bet, 2018, etc.) heart-pumping series opener comes from Lily’s constant proximity to her would-be killer, the action takes place against a backdrop of secret government scandals. The “screwed-up D.C.-insider scandal,” as it is clumsily summarized early on, is pleasingly twisty…

Fortunately, Lily’s voice is captivating, wry, and tough enough to sell this thriller. The novel ends with a cliffhanger that startles, if only because readers will have become so attached to Lily. — Kirkus Reviews

“Fresh, riveting, and thrumming with emotion and romantic suspense, False Memory is absolutely unputdownable. You need this book!” – New York Times bestselling author Meghan March

“I accidentally lost a day to this trilogy! It is unputdownable. Apparently I’m on a dark-and-twisty binge, and this book is addictive.” – USA Today bestselling author Sarina Bowen (review for Harmless series)

Linda Burson and Murder Among Friends

Linda, welcome to Nomad Authors!

Murder Among Friends by Linda Burson

NA: How did you come up with the idea for your book?

LB: I used to work for a Private Investigator so the idea stemmed from that. I added some creative licensing and threw in some characters that were a mix of a few people I knew during that time.

NA: What sort of research did you do to write this book?

LB: I visited the areas that I mentioned in the book. I made sure my timelines worked for driving distances between Boston and the town in Connecticut. I also did some brief research regarding law degrees and interrogation techniques.

NA: What is the main thing you want readers to take away from your book?

LB: I just want readers to be entertained, to feel like they are somewhere else and a part of other’s lives for the time they are reading the story. Personally, I love to escape once-in-a-while through books. I hope my novels are escapes for readers and at the end, they are satisfied with their adventure.

NA: Do you have a day job? What was your job before you started writing full time?

LB: Basically, I’m retired for the most part. I ran multiple businesses for many years. The last fifteen years, I owned and operated a computerized embroidery and products promotion business.

NA: What started you on the path to writing?

LB: I’ve always loved writing, from the first writing assignment I was given at the age of eight. I never stopped. I used to write stories for fun while other kids were complaining about writing.

Finally, after a serious bout of breast cancer, and losing my best friend to the same disease, I decided it was time to do what I loved the most…that life was too short to put everything else ahead of what was in my heart. So, I sat down one day and began my full-time writing journey.

NA: What do your friends and family think about your being a writer?

LB: I think for the most part they are proud of me…proud that I actually made this commitment and stuck with it. Most of the time, no one makes any comments about it. Maybe it’s just because it’s a part of who I am so they figured nothing needs to be said; I’m not sure. I guess they think of it as my normal job, just like they all have regular jobs. I suppose if I became a NY Times bestselling author or something similar, or if a producer wanted to make a movie from one of my novels, then they may make mention of it and make a bigger deal about it. As of now, none of my family members even read my books as far as I know. Most friends, though, will usually ask how I’m doing with the writing.

NA: Do you outline books ahead of time or are you more of a by-the-seat-of-your-pants writer?

LB: I’m definitely a panster. I get as comfortable as I can and start writing what’s in my head. Eventually, though, I jot down information so I can keep it all straight in my mind. I don’t want to have a character with green eyes and wavy hair in Chapter 1 and then have it change in Chapter 20. I want to keep track of other traits, etc. as well and that goes for spellings of names.

NA: What has been one of your most rewarding experiences as an author?

LB: Meeting so many wonderful authors on social media. It is a much bigger community than I ever realized. There are many that are kind, thoughtful, and helpful. They don’t see themselves in competition with you, but as a colleague. Not ALL OF THEM are this way, but most of the ones I associate with the most, definitely are terrific.

An author not promoting another author is not only sad, but ridiculous. Think about it…if a book is really good and you love it, you can read it in one night! I do this all the time. In this case, you could literally read seven books a week. Okay, not normal, but possible. The point I’m trying to make is, we can read many, many books from a variety of authors and still want to read more and more. There’s no reason to feel intimidated or jealous of another. Of course we want to be successful, but recommending another’s book if you enjoyed it, should be easy to do.

NA: What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

LB: If I’m not writing a book, I’m editing one, or reading another. I spend many hours marketing and promoting my work, and I put a newsletter together once a month. Right now, my assistant and I are working on revamping the first book in my MARCY SERIES. If that goes well, we may continue with the others in the series.

I make sure I work out with a fitness trainer a couple times a week to stay fit and healthy. Sometimes, I need to get out and take a drive to clear my mind. This is when I recharge so I may return home and continue the writing process. I’m also a new grandmother, so if there is any time available to visit my new gorgeous granddaughter, I will do that in a heartbeat.

NA: What are your top three favorite books of all time?

LB: This is a difficult question. I don’t know how anyone can answer this question. Usually, my favorite book is the one I’m reading at the moment. Of course, I do like some books better than others, but there are so many novels out there, I couldn’t pick just three. I don’t even think I’ve read my top three favorite books as of yet. I haven’t read enough to answer this question.

NA: What’s one of your pet peeves?

LB: I have a few pet peeves. One of my biggest, and it stems from being an author, is the way some people write reviews. When someone bashes another’s hard work and livelihood, it would be nice if they would be specific about why they bashed it.

If a reader has a problem with a book they’ve read because they don’t believe in a certain behavior, that doesn’t mean the book was bad. They’re taking a personal opinion about a lifestyle and using it against the author.

I may not like BDSM, but if the story is well-written, has a great story-line, is edited well, flows, and has no plot holes, etc.; it’s a good book and deserves a good rating. Just because I don’t live my life that way, doesn’t mean I give a bad review because I don’t believe in it. I’ve seen people do this time and time again.

I just don’t get it. If you don’t like the subject of a book, don’t read it! I hate to end a story crying my eyes out; however, I read a book last year that put me into a deep depression because it was so sad. Did I give it a bad review? NO!! It was a phenomenal story. I don’t like to have a sad ending, but that’s a personal preference. It was still a fantastic book. Of course I could go on about other topics people might not believe in — drug addicts, plural relationships, having children out of wedlock…blah, blah, blah. It’s called fiction for a reason. Unless there are multiple errors and the story is rushed or inconsistent, I don’t see giving it one or two stars because — well, because I didn’t like the fact that the woman in the story cheated on her husband.

NA: Why did you choose the shirt you have on?

LB: I normally choose something for comfort. Of course, I love to look good in it — hopefully thinner LOL — however, comfort is always my first thought.

NA: What errand/chore do you despise the most?

LB: I’m not fond of grocery shopping, believe it or not. I know most people don’t understand this, but I just don’t enjoy it. Of course, I love food. I don’t even mind preparing meals occasionally, but going to the store? I’d rather not!

NA: What famous person would you like to have dinner with?

LB: Since this is kind-of a fantasy question, I think I’ll reply with a fantasy answer. Instead of a famous person, I’d love to have dinner with my entire maternal-side from generations back. If I could get all the grandparents way back to the great-great-great-great grandparents on my mother’s parents side; it would be incredible!

NA: What are you working on now?

LB: I’ve just completed another romantic suspense book that I’m almost finished editing. I’m still working on a women’s fiction story that I started about a year ago, and I’m in the process of revamping the first book in my MARCY SERIES called, RAGE.

NA: If I could spend time writing anywhere in the world, where would I choose to go?

LB: I would love to visit a historical castle somewhere in England, Ireland, or Scotland. A large castle that had a wonderful old library with the most perfect desk to place my laptop, a comfortable chair to sit, and a roaring fireplace for those chilly days and nights; and as my muse, enough property and gardens to roam for hours. Of course, there would need to be a staff so I don’t have to break my concentration by preparing meals, drinks, and snacks. What a perfect dream! [NA: You’d hear my knocking at the castle gates!]

Murder Among Friends blurb:
Emotionally and mentally, Camille Thurston has had it. She needs a rest from her high- pressure job and Boston’s energetic lifestyle. A sabbatical at her brother Zach’s Connecticut home seems like the perfect change of scenery. Little does she know that even in a small town, she can’t escape the intensity of her profession.

A woman is reported missing. Zach and his partner, Russ Nolan, are on the case, and Camille with her own background in private investigation decides she can’t sit by idly. However, things become complicated when she becomes involved not only with the case, but with the family of the missing woman.

Excerpt:
As Frank parks, Cammy sees what she’s guessing to be her brother’s unmarked police vehicle coming toward her. The headlights are bright and are blinding her. When they turn off the lights, she confirms in her mind that it’s him and Russ.

She climbs out of her car. Zach doesn’t stand on formality. He walks right over to her and gives her a big hug. “You always scare me to death, sis.”

“Sorry, Zachary; it’s my fault. Hello there. I’m Frank Dees. I drove her like the escaping bank robber.”

“Frank, it’s great to meet you Thank you for bringing her. I really appreciate it.”

“No thanks necessary, Zach. She wasn’t gettin’ away from me unless she performed magic and disappeared into thin air.”

“I’m so happy to hear you say that. I’m already calming down. This is my partner, Russ Nolan. Russ, Cam’s boss, Frank Dees, retired decorated police officer.”

“You can leave out the decorated part,” Frank says as he shakes hands with Russ.

“No sir. You earned it and deserve the recognition. It’s an honor to meet you. Thank you for taking such good care of my sister. She worries me.”

“She’s damn good at what she does, Zach. Believe me. I’m more than proud of her.”

“That’s great to hear coming from you, Frank.” Zach notes. “Well, let’s go inside and get this over with.”

“Zach, please let me go in first.”

“Cam, you know I can’t let you tell him. You’re not even supposed to be here.”

“I know. I won’t say anything. Just let him see me first.”

“Alright.”

“Let’s stay quiet and get off the street before the whole neighborhood comes out,” Cam whispers.

“Good idea, Cam,” Frank agrees.

They all walk up to Grant’s front door. Cam tells Zach not to ring the bell. It’s not the quietest and Grant’s bedroom is in the front of the house. He’ll most likely hear the knock. This way they won’t take a chance of waking Austin or disturbing the neighbors. Zach taps on the door a few times. There’s no answer.
“Here Zach, let me, please,” Cam whispers.
He gives her a frustrated look, then he nods his approval. Cammy knocks three times, pauses, knocks twice, pauses, and then knocks four times. She repeats this process about ten seconds later. This is when she can see the hall light up the stairs go on through the glass in the door. She knows he heard.
He darts down the stairs. She can see his shadow. She’s certain he knows it’s her. She knows she’s about to see a huge disappointment on his face when he looks behind her. She’s shaking. Her palms are sweating and her hands are fidgeting. Those three nervous signs she can’t control.
Grant hurriedly opens the front door. “Cam,” he shouts with a large smile. When he sees the three men with her, as if on remote control, the smile is gone.
Grant steps back. After looking at Zach, Russ, and Frank, he goes back to staring at Cammy.
“Well, it’s obvious something’s not right, and I’m guessing it has to do with Paula. What’d you find out?” He directs his questions to Cammy.
Zach speaks. “Grant, we believe we found your wife.”
Grant’s eyes widen and his breathing is ragged. He raises his right hand and pushes it through his hair. Cammy knows his nervous idiosyncrasies, but she’s hoping she’s the only one. She can see his hands tremble, but it’s only a slight movement. She notes Frank is watching him, but Russ and Zach are concentrating on his face.

Excerpt from Bedeviled:
Keeping his mind on the topic always took all of Alex’s effort anyway. When Charlotte sat hip-to-hip with him as she had today, he felt the heat of her skin, saw the long length of thigh exposed in front of him, heard her heavy post-run breathing until he was in sensory overload. She smelled so good, not stinky and sweaty like he must. She smelled classy and expensive with all those clean, floral scents. She smelled like a woman he could trust.
More like a woman I want to trust.
Thinking back, Alex recognized that she had been hiding something all along. When he wasn’t lost in a sensual fog, he was able to zero in on where the conversations lagged, when she got testy with his probing or tried to change the subject. It had something to do with her life in Boston before she moved to Chicago and it was something that had been going on for a while. She was practiced at her excuses by the time she used them on him. She was making too many trips back East for ‘Harvard stuff.’ She had met Regan Howe through this same ‘Harvard stuff’ yet Regan went back to her alma mater only once or twice a year, if that.
Oh yeah, Charlotte is definitely up to something and I intend to find out what. I have been patient long enough.
Sitting waiting now for Charlotte to arrive at Starbucks, Alex promised himself that he would get to the bottom of this or walk away.
Since she had declined his offer of a ride, Alex currently sat at a shady outside table enjoying the last of summer, waiting for her to walk over and speculating on her possible secrets. He was planning his subtle interrogation during the few minutes Charlotte would need to make her way across the park,
Stubborn. She should have just accepted the ride.
You driving over or walking?” she had asked him, once they caught their breath.
“I have the car if you want a ride?” When she hesitated, he tried tempting her. “I have the new car.”
Alex was the proud owner of a brand new Mercedes AMG. The sleek, luxury sports car suited him despite most people’s image of him as logical, conservative and staid. The need for speed was actually deep in his blood. “You will love it, tight on the curves, fast and quiet. She purrs,” he had bragged.
Charlotte hesitated on his last remark and Alex had been sure she would accept. “The new car, huh?” she sounded intrigued. “I am excited to see it at last, Alex. You have certainly been talking about it long enough.”
“I need to walk off this tight hamstring, so I’ll have to pass this time,” she had replied reluctantly. “Meet you there in five.” Of course, Charlotte had been Charlotte, and that included being unpredictable.
Charlotte, leaving Alex standing there, had taken off across the park without a backward glance. Alex stood dumbfounded a moment, watching her slow jog-walk toward the trail across the grassy lawns of Lincoln Park. She was heading directly toward their usual post-run Starbucks and if he didn’t get moving, she would be there first.
Still he stood, willing her to look back and flash him that smile that changed her whole face. She didn’t, of course, and Alex was left standing there, admiring her lithe figure and the smooth bunch and release of her muscles in those tiny running shorts as she moved into the distance. Reminding himself to close his gaping mouth, Alex jogged to the parking lot, trading an extra moment of admiring a beautiful woman for a few short moments admiring his beautiful new car.
Arriving at the coffee shop several minutes before Charlotte, Alex was forced to cool his heels. He spent the time piecing together anything he could think of to uncover Charlotte’s deep, dark, secret. Admittedly, he needed the ten-minute head start away from her to give his overheated blood a little cooling time too. He kept envisioning the two of them in that sweet ride, sitting close with their sweat-slicked bodies. The image had intensified the jolts of.electricity already coursing through his veins from running beside her scantily clothed body.
Too bad she turned me down. One of these days we will be in tight quarters, all alone, and I will make my move. I have resisted too long already.
Since the mention of her tight hamstring, all Alex could think about was massaging her leg, and moving up from there. Did the woman not understand what she was doing to him? After all, he was a healthy red-blooded man. How long was he supposed to watch her round little ass wiggle in front of him, or the glide of muscles in those incredible legs – or OMG – her breasts bob up and down in those little running tops. The woman was killing him. He wanted her so badly he could taste it.
He chided himself to stop thinking of her that way, as he always did when he lusted after her. He would catch himself wanting her and repress the overwhelming sexual response that had plagued him since the beginning. She was so much more than just beautiful and sexy. She was a brilliant woman, funny, witty, complex and delightful. She considered him a running partner, and a friend…
…but that body, oh, that body. Stop it!
Alex determined to stay focused on what she might be trying to cover up and got his desire under control. He reviewed the signs – when she changed topics or failed to make eye contact. He carefully dissected her words while he waited for her to arrive. He knew she was being intentionally elusive. Alex resolved again that today would be the day he found out what she was concealing, beginning as soon as she arrived.
Speaking of arriving, Charlotte should have shown up long before now. She would have, unless something had happened. How long had he been sitting, pondering? How much time had passed?
Heart racing like a freight train, Alex ran into the park. Unsure why, he was terrified of what he might find.

She’s faking her amnesia to fool a very real killer.

False Memory by Meli RaineFALSE MEMORY (Book 1)
Release Date: August 15, 2019
Ebook and Audio Available

It all started with the bereavement flowers with my name on them.

Not the best way to wake up, right? I work in a flower shop. I know a funeral arrangement when I see one.

I know a killer when I see one, too. And one is standing in my hospital room right now, straight behind the man who saved my life.

I can’t tell anyone the truth, because that’s the fastest way to really die. So I do the next best thing. I “lose” my memory.

I fake my amnesia.

Pretending not to remember a brutal attempted murder has its perks. The killer is backing down, spending less time around me, loosening the noose.

The less I claim to recall, the more my rescuer, Duff, works to help me “remember.” I hate lying to him.

But he doesn’t understand that my memory is dangerous. To me. And to him.

Fooling everyone isn’t easy. It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done.

Except it’s starting to look like I’ve been fooling myself.

In more ways than one.

False Hope by Meli RaineFALSE HOPE (Book 2)
Release Date: August 31, 2019

She thinks she’s fooled me. But I’ve known all along.

Almost.

Lily is hiding something, a secret so big, she came out of a year-long coma and her first instinct was to lie.

Who does that? Someone who is afraid. No—not afraid.

Terrified. And it’s my job to take that fear away.

My partner and I have spent countless man-hours hunting down the cold-blooded killer who did this to her. Meanwhile, Lily’s spent her waking hours recovering. Getting stronger. Getting smarter.

Staying beautiful.

Never get involved emotionally. That’s my dictate. Never get attached.

When you realize you’re caught in a triangle, it turns out there is no exit.

Crossing a line is easy. Holding a line takes strength.

Lily’s shooter knows that she’s my weakness.

And he’s about to exploit that by breaking a line and escaping, claiming a hostage in the process.

One I have to get back.

No matter what it takes.

False Hope is book 2 in the False trilogy by USA Today bestselling author Meli Raine.

Release Date: September 17, 2019

This isn’t how my life is supposed to end.

Then again, a case of mistaken identity got me here. No one is ever who we think they are. Especially my kidnapper, a man whose entire life is designed to deceive.

Powerful people want my rescuer to die. I’m just a lure. A pawn. An object.

But objects hold meaning. Emotions attach themselves without logic.

Like love.

I now know that Duff will do everything to protect me.

If he gets here in time. And if I can hold on long enough.

Because my body can only handle so much. Pushed to the limits, it’s finally giving out. Giving way.

Giving up.

I know Duff, though.

He never will.

Blink.

The False Series by Meli Raine

Excerpt from False Start:

My nose fills with a sudden blast of fresh roses that aren’t really there. This happens sometimes, where my senses get jumbled and confused. Memory comes back to me in the form of a tingling arm, a sudden flash of light, a scent that reminds me of the past.

Emotion swells like a balloon in my chest as I miss the flower shop, miss greeting customers, miss the tacky feel of florist’s tape all over my fingerpads, miss the normalcy I never appreciated.

My past self was so naïve.

And that’s how my present self should be, too.

Grief sucks all the oxygen out of my lungs at the exact moment that Romeo and Duff approach me, the onslaught of their presence and my depletion too much. Being hollow around them is no big deal.

Being emotional? That’s not safe. Can’t pretend when I can’t control myself.

Betty Ann Harris and Possessing Prudence

Nomad Authors is proud to welcome romantic suspense and paranormal romance author Betty Ann Harris!

Possessing Prudence

What sort of research did you do to write Possessing Prudence?

I knew in advance and decidedly did some research for this paranormal romance mystery, Possessing Prudence. In the prologue, the main character’s ancestors are immigrating to America to escape the rebellion going on in France after the American Revolution. I had to research the historical facts of that time period, names used, clothing worn, transportation used, etc.

Over a hundred years later, in 1897, the story really begins as a beautiful, young woman of French descent, is accused of murder. I had to then research the historical facts of that time period. Then onto current day, as the main character, Prudence Trivit, is trying to solve the murder mystery and clear her great aunt’s name and reputation.
In the main story plot, there are hauntings, poltergeists, a seance performed, and other paranormal occurrences that I wanted to be realistic and believable, so I had to a lot of research on paranormal activities.

What is the main thing you want readers to take away from your book?

I’d like readers to take away a sense that there can be a strong connection between our ancestors and loved ones who have passed on, but you have to be open to it. Also, I believe this story is hopeful and shows that true love never dies.

A fun fact about writing your book.

There is a seance that takes place in the book, so I viewed videos of actual seances and read about how they are performed. It was quite interesting and a bit spooky sometimes. One particular video gave me goosebumps

Do you have a day job? What was your job before you started writing full time?

Besides being an author, I am an author/book promoter. I have my own small business, Love Writers Bibliophiles & Promotions, that has been operating since 2009. Prior to that, I worked for a landscape design firm and garden center taking care of the multitude of plants and I also worked in the office part-time. I’ve always been an avid plant lover.

What do your friends and family think about your being a writer?

My friends like the idea that I’m an author and most of them support me quite a bit. I must laugh to myself, though, as they tend to think the life of a romance author is what they’d like to believe it is: getting up at 10:00 in the morning, grabbing a cup of coffee and a muffin, then sitting in my lovely, little office space, music playing in the background, and typing my manuscript with my bathrobe and fuzzy slippers on. It’s not like that at all!

The biggest surprise you had after becoming an author.

I must say, I was surprised at how time consuming it is to gain a following and to promote my books. It is a never-ending process.

Do you outline books ahead of time or are you more of a by-the-seat-of-your-pants writer?

For my first written book, Eureka Point, I tried to do an outline, but soon discovered that was not the way I roll. So I guess you could call me a by-the-seat-of-your-pants writer. I also write in complete chronological order, never writing chapter six before chapter two or anything like that. The story unfolds in my mind that way, kind of like watching a movie scene.

Which kind of scenes are the hardest for you to write? Action, dialogue, sex?

For me, the hardest scenes to write are action scenes. So many effects have to be considered, like movements, sounds, etc. I do, however, love to write dialogue and it comes fairly easy. I think you can show a lot about your characters’ personalities by what they say and how they say it.

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

I have several hobbies that I enjoy. The first is interior decorating. I loved it when we moved into our new townhouse so I could start at square one and decorate the rooms. I love looking at paint color samples, fabrics and snooping around for vintage pieces.

I also enjoy going out to lunch with friends, or visiting a tea rooms, and shopping.

I spend a lot of time with my two adorable dogs, Daisy and Dexter, commonly known as D&D.

Why did you choose the shirt you have on?

I live in southeastern Pennsylvania and I very much dislike the winter. I chose the long-sleeved, heavier weight shirt I have on because it’s warm and comfortable.

What errand/chore do you despise the most?

I absolutely detest having to drive to the post office. But I love to go grocery shopping.

What are you working on now?

I’m currently working on a quirky cozy mystery but would love to write a sequel to Possessing Prudence. I have some ideas for that and hope to get cracking on that soon. I became quite attached to my characters, and with Prudence Trivit, never more so. I’d like to know her and have her as a friend in real life.

Betty Ann Harris and Possessing Prudence

Possessing Prudence Book Blurb:

The quaint seaport town of Mystic Port is steeped in history. Prudence Trivit, the town’s historian, is on a mission to find out the truth about her Great Aunt Alexandra Beaudicort, who was accused and found guilty of murdering her husband, the Mayor of Mystic Port, back in 1897. Prudence, known as Prudy, is certain of her great aunt’s innocence.

A handsome young journalist, Dylan Monroe, is sent to Mystic Port to interview Prudy in advance of the town’s 250th anniversary celebration. Dylan immediately notices Prudy’s uncanny resemblance to her great aunt in the huge portrait of Alexandra that hangs in the museum. Stunned by her beauty and so intrigued by the story of Alexandra, Dylan falls for Prudy, and together they investigate to find out the truth. But uncovering the truth comes with some mishaps and mayhem. As the spirit of Alexandra points them in the right direction, the opposing spirits try to dissuade them.

“If you’re a fan of Jessica L. Randall’s, The Obituary Society Series, then you’ll be charmed by Betty Ann Harris’ Possessing Prudence.”

Excerpt from Possessing Prudence:

Dylan turned on the recorder and started asking questions. “I’m intrigued by this Beaudicort woman. Can you tell me more about her?”

“Yes, well, Samuel Beaudicort was the mayor of Mystic Port in the eighteen nineties. His bride, Alexandra, was actually in charge of his mayoral campaign. It was unusual for a woman prior to women’s suffrage to hold a position of such importance, and to have been successful in getting her husband elected.”

“Are you saying she was a woman ahead of her time?”

“Yes, I guess I am. From what I’ve been told and from what I’ve read about her, she was one of those women who wanted to have it all: a loving marriage, successful career, children, and she had an extreme interest in politics.”

“That’s quite interesting. She must have had a very full life.”

“Well, she did have one child, a son named Simon. Unfortunately, before she had a chance to have any more children, her husband, the mayor, died suddenly while in office. Devastated as she was to have lost her husband at such an early age, leaving her a widow at twenty-four, she carried on displaying grace and great strength. She wanted to take her husband’s place as mayor, but she was unable to do so.”

“Do you mean because she was a woman?”

“I’m not sure if she could have become mayor or not. I rather doubt it. But she wasn’t given the chance, because something happened that changed her life forever.” Prudy paused for effect.

Dylan appeared most intrigued. “Please, continue, what happened?”

“Alexandra was arrested for the murder of her husband.”

Music teacher Dylan Haynes knows Erica is in trouble, and her black eye is only the first clue. The stubborn yet vulnerable woman needs a friend, but he’s determined to give her everything she deserves.

Will Erica listen to the music in her heart and trust Dylan, or will her past always threaten her future?

Excerpt

Erica leaned up and combed her fingers through her hair. “I’ve never made love outside before. It’s a surreal experience.”

“We can do it wherever you want. In an elevator, in an alley, in my car. I’m game anywhere and everywhere for as long as you want me.”

“I want you so much it hurts.”

Dylan thumbed her knuckles and hoped she meant that. “I don’t know how you feel about labels, but I haven’t had a girlfriend in years. I’ve just had flings, but I want more than that with you. I want us to be with each other and no one else. I want a relationship with you.”

Tears welled in her eyes. “I feel divided in two. A part of me thinks we’re moving too fast, but another part says to jump in with both feet. I want something real with you too. I don’t want to feel dirty after we fool around. Just make me happy. Will you do that, Dylan?”

Her soft, pain-filled words struck Dylan like a dagger in his gut, and he bit the insides of his cheeks to steady his features.

Her ex-boyfriend had probably called her names and degraded her after they would find release in each other’s body, and the bastard likely never cared if she reached climax at all.

“I understand, Erica. I promise to treat you with nothing but respect, and I will do my very best to make you happy. I swear you will always scream your head off in pleasure every time I touch you. I’m not the sort of man to get my jollies off and leave my girl hanging.”

Her lips twitched up in a grin. “That’s good to hear.”

“So are you my girl?”

“Yeah, I’m your girl.” Erica giggled and tapped her fingers on his chest.

“How could I not be? You make a very compelling argument, but I will have to hold you to it. I’m definitely looking forward to screaming every time you touch me.”

“Let’s rest, and then we’ll play again. The night’s early, and I’ve only just begun.”

Excerpt:

Chapter One

“What did you learn last night?”

“A gentleman must always believe he knows best.”

Confident that her answer was pleasing, Faith reached across the table to help herself to a macaroon but a sharp slap across the back of the hand stopped her progress by the silver teapot.

Her smile of feigned contrition was rewarded with a raised eyebrow from Madame Chambon. Not an invitation to partake of a macaroon, unfortunately. The table laden with eclairs and petit fours in Madame’s private sitting room was merely for show.

“Greedy girl, Faith! You can eat at the Dorchester tomorrow and I daresay you won’t even spare a thought for the other girls who are justified in being somewhat jealous of your cossetted life.” Madame sniffed as she patted one of the grizzled, orange curls of her elaborate coiffure. Faith suspected a squirrel’s pelt had made its contribution. “I’m sure they wonder every day why you never have to stir yourself – or anyone else, for that matter – to get your fine clothes or a roof over your head.” Madame Chambon piled three macaroons onto her already laden plate before making a sweeping gesture that encompassed the furnishings of her surprisingly decorous private sitting room with its gold tasseled green velvet curtains and flock wallpaper. “What have you told them, Faith? About why you are here, I mean?”

Faith’s stomach rumbled as she gazed from the prints of the famous artists that lined the walls to the fine fare in front of her, ordered from Fortnum and Mason. These monthly sessions in table manners were supposed to give Faith the practice she needed to deport herself like a lady when eating in public. However, under Madame’s guardianship, Faith never actually got to try the specialties.

“Answer me, Faith. In all the three years that you’ve been here, you’ve had to do precisely nothing to justify your existence. Surely the girls have questioned you? I have my own version of the truth for them, as you know, but I’d be interested to hear what you have to say.”

Faith didn’t answer. She already knew how lucky she was, but Madame was not ready to drop the subject, despite having just crammed an entire chocolate éclair into her mouth. Faith just managed to make out the muffled words, “Every night you lie peacefully in your bed while the other girls have to earn their livings.”

Lying peacefully in her bed was not how Faith would describe the restfulness of her slumber. She was kept awake every night by the grunts and cries of ecstasy that penetrated the thin walls of her attic chamber.

Still, she’d finally learned when it was wise to respond meekly, so she bowed her head and stared at her neat kid gloves while dreaming of the delicacies Mrs. Gedge would order for them when Faith really was dining with her at the Dorchester Hotel the following afternoon. The Sacher Torte Mrs. Gedge had ummed and aahed over before finally choosing the baked Alaska from the sweets trolley last month still haunted her. However, since part of Faith’s tutoring included how to win over reluctant gentleman ‘and make them wild with wanting’ which is how Madame phrased it, then surely Faith could persuade her American benefactress to order the Austrian chocolate specialty?

She was so busy rehearsing her words for tomorrow that she almost missed Madame’s prophetic and appalling statement.

“Well, Faith, the time has come for you to start earning your way, now.”

Faith brought her head up in shock. Was Madame teasing? When it appeared not, she gripped the table edge as she struggled for composure. For so long she’d known the reckoning would come. Yes, and with three years preparing for it, she’d believed she could meet it head-on with the necessary fortitude.

But there’d been no warning.

She began to shake, biting into her bottom lip and clasping her hands in her lap to try and keep secret the manifestations of her terror from Madame who’d only be spurred onto gloating and make her suffer even more.

“Mrs. Gedge reported last month that she wasn’t entirely happy you were ready for what she has in store for you when she took you to tea, Faith.” Madame chewed noisily, unperturbed, it seemed, by the crumbs that landed on her gaudy vermillion skirts.

Faith didn’t suggest that Mrs. Gedge’s dissatisfaction was perhaps the fault of Faith’s tutor – the one sitting in front of her – who knew nothing about deporting herself as a lady.

With a dainty gesture using only her forefingers, Madame Chambon raised her plate and licked at the crumbs that had not been dislodged before saying, “Fortunately, Lady Vernon is recovered at last from her long indisposition and has agreed to forget your rudeness to her from six months ago. In fact, she’ll be here shortly. Yes, she’ll soon have you passing the scrutiny of the most discerning duchess.” Madame gobbled down another macaroon with as much finesse as the dogs Faith’s father used to goad into fighting each other after they’d fought over the scraps from the scrubbed wooden table at the farm. Not that there’d been many scraps with ten children to feed.

“Should we not have waited for Lady Vernon?” Faith suggested, daringly. But she had to say something to stop herself from launching into a volley of querulous questions about exactly what form this ‘having to earn her own way’ might take.

Madame Chambon pushed aside an untouched plate of bread and butter to reach for another chocolate éclair and sighed. “There was just so much food on the table it seemed unnecessary to wait if her ladyship was going to be late. Ah! And here she is.” Madame’s orange painted mouth turned up at a knock on the door. “Shoulders back, Faith! And make sure you don’t talk with your mouth full.”

Since this was not a danger, Faith supposed there might be some compensation in having to face her former nemesis who surely must subscribe to the belief that learning table manners required one having to eat.

Madame threw her arms wide in a welcome as the door opened to admit the new arrival. “Good evening, Lady Vernon. We’re so glad you’ve recovered from your chest ailment,” she gushed. “A good rest has done you the world of good. Why, you look ten years younger. Just as you do every time I see you, in fact. And we’re indeed humbled that you’ve consented to return.” Madame simpered at the elderly woman, dressed all in black who looked, Faith thought, even more wraith-like than usual as she pinned up the veil of her bonnet and took the seat at the table proffered by Madame who went on, “I’m sure you’ll feel even better once you’ve heard Faith’s heartfelt apology.”

Faith blushed under the scrutiny of the two pairs of expectant, unforgiving eyes, and glanced longingly at the remaining macaroon.

Yes, there were times when it was worth being abject. She mightn’t mean what she said, but if the last three years under Madame Chambon’s roof had taught her one thing, it was how to sound heartfelt and sincere when she felt anything but.

“I’m sorry for my rude comments about…” Faith hesitated. Perhaps it was best not to stir up old memories. While it must be perfectly obvious to anyone who met Lady Vernon as to why an earl’s daughter could remain a spinster into her sixtieth year, it hadn’t been in anyone’s interest – Faith’s least of all, it turned out – for Faith to have gone into quite such specific and extensive detail regarding her thoughts on the likely reasons. “I behaved like a child, though it’s such a long time ago, now, I can barely remember what was going through my head at the time. I was only seventeen and, in those days, prone to losing my temper but now I’m eighteen and, thanks to all your efforts in teaching me how to act like a lady, Lady Vernon, I’m so far from the rude and impulsive young thing I was before, you’d not recognize me today. Thanks to your thorough tutelage, I am determined that I will never speak out of turn, to you, or anyone. Indeed, I have changed! I truly believe that, confronted by a table of delicacies like this, for example, I would certainly not embarrass you or Mrs. Gedge or any lovely young man or his mother who might take me out to tea by any show of greediness or lack of restraint.”

Lady Vernon’s eyes remained fixed firmly on Faith for the duration of this speech with no indication of how forgiving or otherwise she might prove to be.

After a long silence, she spoke. “Restraint?” She sniffed. “Restraint is the most important requirement of any young lady, Faith. I’ve told you this many times, so I’m glad it’s a lesson you claim to have finally learned.”

With her eyes fixed on Faith, she reached towards the remaining macaroon that sat lonely on its plate just in front of them both, her long-fingered hand hovering just above. “Please pass that to me, Faith. I can’t seem to reach it.”

Wordlessly, Faith complied, schooling her features into impassivity while she railed inside, I hate you! I hate you! as she watched Lady Vernon transport the coconut confection to her thin, bloodless lips.

“Delicious,” Lady Vernon murmured. “In fact, I believe it is the best macaroon I have ever tasted? You must surely agree, Faith, since the plate is now empty.”

She looked pointedly at the two remaining crumbs that clung to the edge of the fine china, as if to imply that Faith had eaten the rest. Then she indicated the plate of bread and butter near Madame Chambon. “Please eat, Faith. Madame Chambon and I have a leisurely afternoon at our disposal. She and I will partake of the remaining chocolate eclairs –” Her pointed chin wobbled slightly, whether from the suppression of mirth or the swallowing of bile, Faith could only guess, “while you make good work of the bread and butter with all the ladylike restraint you’re so anxious to prove.”

About Snatching Dianna:

The hours are counting down as investigators try to prove that Dianna Murphy has been snatched. Unfortunately, without witnesses and solid evidence, all the police really know is that she is missing.

When suburban Milwaukee law student Dianna Murphy fails to connect with her roommate, there is no real evidence that she has been snatched. Until Law Professor Janet MacLachlan, a former covert agent, discovers a single clue, one that points to a taking by a slave trafficking cartel. In a race against time, Janet recruits her husband, secret agent Cade Matthews, small-town Police Chief David Manders and his wife, criminal defense attorney Julianna Constant, and other law students to uncover the truth. Can they prove she has been taken, before Dianna disappears without a trace?

Excerpt:
After what seemed like hours in the sweltering van, it lurched to a stop.

Dianna heard a man bark orders. A door to the van opened and someone pulled the rope from her feet, then removed her hood. She took a deep breath.  A man grabbed her by the arm, forced to her feet, and pulled from the van. Dianna stumbled when she hit the ground. The stones were hot and her feet were covered by athletic socks, no shoes. Show no weakness.

Dianna immediately surveyed her surroundings. It was still night, but she was in a well-lit courtyard. A large stone mansion stood in front of her. She looked to her right, then her left. The courtyard was enclosed by a large stone fence, at least eight feet high. A fortress. Fortunately, Dianna was a rock-climber. She could rappel over the fence with the right equipment. All she would need was something to serve as a pick, maybe a rope. A knife, a screwdriver, even a fork. Keep your eyes and ears open. Be ready.

A large black man, dressed in a white suit and a maroon turban, walked out of the front door and down the stairs. He stopped and flashed a malevolent smile. He flung his arms wide and in a cultured baritone boomed, “Welcome to paradise, ladies. I hope you enjoy your stay.”

Some of the guards laughed.

“Crikey,” Tillie muttered. “Sounds like a blasted genie.”

Dianna glanced sideways and for the first time, got a look at her new friend. She was tall and thin, her body well defined. She looked strong and aware, almost fierce. Her eyes seemed to be studying the place, taking everything in. She showed no fear. Instead, she seemed interested. Something was off. Tillie did not act like a victim as the others did. She was not cowed. Was she a cop? Or like Dianna, someone who would not permit themselves to be broken?

There was only one thing of which Dianna was certain. She had found a friend. A useful one.
